The Pershore Plum Festival 2011

Pershore is a delightful market town on the banks of the River Avon in Worcestershire about 12 miles (20km) from our Cotswold holiday cottages in Broadway. Pershore is famed for its Georgian architecture, magnificent abbey and plums.

The Vale of Evesham has been famous for its fruit since medieval times. In the 19th century a seedling of wild plum was discovered growing in Tyddesley Wood just outside Pershore. This seedling was cultivated to produce the Pershore Yellow Egg Plum. Around 1890 another plum trial resulted in the creation of the famous Pershore Purple. Further information about plum farming in and around Pershore by the Deakin family during the early 1920s can be found here.

Pershore loves its plums and to celebrate them every August it dresses the town up in purple for its Plum Festival. The 2011 Pershore Plum Festival kicked off on Friday 29th July 2011 with an offical launch and Gala Dinner and the crowning of this year's Plum Princess.

Saturday 30th July 2011 saw the Grand Festival Opening in Pershore's Plum Alley filmed by the BBC for Songs of Praise which will be televised on Sunday 4th September 2011.

This year's Pershore Plum Festival Race Day at Worcester Racecourse will take place on Friday 5th August. A great day out for all the family. Gates open at 12.15pm with the first race at 2.20pm. Roy and Caroline Hirons will be exhibiting their Pershore Racecourse memorabilia during the day.

The Pershore Plum Fayre and Farmers' Market takes place from Saturday 27th to Monday 29th August 2011. Pershore's biggest event of the year when it celebrates the fruit for which it is internationally famous.
