2012 Dry Stone Walling Courses in the Cotswolds

Why not learn a traditional rural skill whilst staying in one of our Cotswold holiday cottages? Enrol on a 2 day dry stone walling course run by the Cotswolds Conservation Board.

Dry stone walls are not unique to the Cotswolds but they are a distinctive feature, the oolitic Cotswold limestone divides fields and lines the roadside in the upland areas of the Cotswolds.

During the spring and summer months, 2 day dry stone walling courses are held at a range of locations in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Led by qualified walling instructors, the courses are designed for both beginners wishing to get a taste of walling and improvers wishing to improve their skills.

Beginners' courses cover: the importance of dry stone walls in the Cotswolds, dismantling stone walls and sorting stone, laying foundations, using batter frames and laying courses, through stones and the laying of copestones.

The following dry stone walling courses are being held this year:

All the above courses can be reached from our Cotswold holiday cottages in Broadway: Willow Cottage, Corner Cottage, The Stables, Sheldon Cottage and Rafters - ideal locations to stay whilst learning an interesting and unusual rural skill. Courses can be booked via the Cotswolds AONB see www.cotswoldsruralskills.org.uk for further details.
