Celebrating Art and Education in the Show Village of England, the 2012 Broadway Arts Festival will be held in and around the village between Saturday 9th and Sunday 17th June 2012. The 2012 Festival is dedicated to John Singer Sargent RA and The Broadway Colony, featuring Alfred Parsons RA.
The beautiful village of Broadway nestles beneath the Cotswold hills in the north Cotswolds. Broadway is steeped in history with its origins dating back to Roman times. Today Broadway is a lively, vibrant village with a superb range of independent shops, designer boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, pubs and tea and coffee shops attracting visitors from across the world, all drawn to the beauty of this quintessential English village with its interesting artistic heritage.
Biennially in June, Broadway hosts a wonderful Arts Festival celebrating the work of 'The Broadway Colony' (John Singer Sargent, Alfred Parsons, William Morris, Frank Millet, Fred Barnard, Edwin Austin Abbey - to name a few) and the Arts and Crafts movement. During the 2012 Festival there will be:
- An Exhibition of paintings by John Singer Sargent RA, Alfred Parsons RA and members of The Broadway Colony at Haynes Fine Art, Picton House Galleries, Broadway. The Exhibition, curated by Dr Clare Willsdon will be formally opened by Sir Roy Strong.
- An Exhibition of Arts and Crafts
- Lecture by Sir Roy Strong on The Laskett Gardens, Sir Roy's gardens are the largest formal gardens to be created in England since 1945.
- A Flower Festival in St Michael and All Angels' Church
- An Art Exhibition by local schoolchildren
- An Art competition featuring both amateur and professional artists
- Talks on the paintings and gardens of Alfred Parsons RA
- Tours led by Marion Mako of Parsons' Broadway gardens (Luggers Hall, Court Farm and Russell House)
- A concert by the celebrated violinist Michael Bochmann with harpist David Watkins
- A jazz concert
